TORMENTOSO Touriga Nacional

We created a distinctive South African wine from this uniquely Portuguese grape. We sourced the grapes from a single vineyard high on a mountain slope in Stellenbosch. This wine has the ripe blackberry aromas with orange blossom notes characteristic of Touriga. It is rich, complex and elegant with fine grippy tannins. The Tormentoso Touriga Nacional will pair well with rich soups and hearty stews.

Touriga Nacional tends to have excellent structure with intense flavours that are typically both fruity and floral. This small vineyard on the slopes of Simonsberg mountain in Stellenbosch was originally planted for port production. We have found that the unirrigated vineyard produces rich yet elegant still wines with concentrated flavours as well as typical varietal characters.

The vineyard was hand harvested and then sorted into open fermenters where fermentation took place over 10 days, with regular punch-downs. After pressing, the wine is racked to small American and French oak barrels for up to 14 months of barrel maturation. Mostly older barrels are used for this wine. The wine is bottled without fining and using only a light filtration.
