TORMENTOSO Syrah & Mourvèdre

Syrah is well suited to the Agter-Paarl region. Shale soils combined with low rainfall and warm conditions reduce the vigour of the vineyards and produce smaller berries, resulting in distinctive Syrah wines with concentrated “grapey” (or as we say in South Africa, “wine-gum”) flavours, clove spice and distinctive minerality. The dry-land Syrah vineyards grow on well-drained shale soils and ensure a mixture of concentrated fruit flavours and optimum ripeness year on year. Mourvèdre adds spice and liquorice notes.

Intensely aromatic, with notes of orange-peel, leather, cigar tobacco, black liquorice and dark-plummy fruit. The Tormentoso Syrah & Mourvèdre is medium to full bodied with layers of black fruit and leather notes. It finishes with typical black wine-gum flavours, rounded out by soft, juicy tannins. This wonderfully spicy wine is an excellent accompaniment to South African “braai” (barbecued meat and vegetables), roast beef and beef loin, venison and matured cheese.

Vinification

The intense flavour of the grapes comes from dry-farmed, trellised vineyards that grow in deep, pebbly Malmesbury shale soils. The wine is barrel matured for 12 months in 225- and 300-litre oak barrels before blending. We’ve found that a little Mourvèdre blended into the Syrah is the perfect match; the dark fruit and liquorice spice from the Syrah marries well with the complexity of the Mourvèdre.
