TORMENTOSO old vine Chenin Blanc

We discovered this vineyard on a 300-year-old farm, farmed by a 6th generation Paarl family. Planted in 1977 in the Agter-Paarl, this old, bush-vine Chenin Blanc vineyard is un-irrigated; its deep, well-established root system allows the vines to stay green and healthy throughout the dry summer months. Concentrated fruit, high natural acidity and minerality from the shale soil make this the ideal vineyard for our lightly oaked Chenin Blanc.

A rich style of Chenin Blanc with ripe peach and apricot aromas and tropical fruit flavours. The acidity is well balanced and the wine has a long mineral finish. An extremely versatile wine, the award-winning old vine Chenin Blanc pairs well with spicy curry dishes, barbecued chicken, sushi, salads, citrus-inspired cuisine and matured white cheese.

Vinification

The key to our Chenin Blanc’s rich flavours is the old bush vine where we source our grapes. This un-trellised, un-irrigated vineyard is hand harvested to ensure gentle handling of the grapes. We allow 10% of the wine to ferment in 225-litre new oak barrels and mature for five months on its lees. For added richness and structure, the wine is stirred on its lees for the first few months. The balance of the wine is fermented in stainless-steel tanks and also allowed lees contact. After five months sur lie in tank and barrel, the wine is bottled after filtration and fining.
